Roundup post for 2006 January 2nd, 2007
Hi there everyone. I’ve been a little busy lately, going a bit bonkers with projects and some new 2007 craziness at work. Just posting some quick links and general end-of-the-year roundup bits here.
In case you missed it before, I uploaded some photos from my trip to the Italian origami convention in Verbania. I can’t lay claim to them being amazingly wonderful photos, but there’s some nice stuff in there, and lots of tessellations (what a shock, I know.) Make sure to check out the nice pieces by Sipho Mabona, who I had the great pleasure of finally meeting in person. (his flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/sipmab). I was also very excited to meet Ralf Konrad, to see my good friend Mélisande again, as well as Roberto Gretter and several other nice people that I ran into at the OUSA convention in summer 2006.
OK, so moving on… I’d also like to point out the really interesting work coming from Ray Schamp and Polly Verity, and the group they post to most often: Origami Corrugations
There’s a lot of stuff here that I really dig, and it’s a good place for folded pleated goodness. I’m really into 3D pleated structures, and I’m just pleased as punch to know there’s other folks who feel the same way and who actually made a Flickr group about it!
Some other great stuff:
Tachi Tomohiro: so glad he joined Flickr- I love his work and being able to interact with him about it is doubleplusgood
Fernando Sierra (elelvis): I haven’t spoken to him yet, but seeing stuff like this over and over again from different people makes me think that I need to go to Colombia to study! There must be something amazing in the air down there…
Pietro Seminelli: Saw his work via a video link from Mélisande, and I’m floored- check out the leather pillow on his website. It’s fantastic, and I really need to make one just like it to match a chair in my office. That seems like another project for a rainy day, right there…
Marius Watz: I continually get a little buzz from his work, every time I see a new piece. This guy is great. His recent foray into rapid prototyping (with bronze!) is worth checking out, too.
Lots of things going on these days, I’ll try to make a better effort to post things rather than stashing them away with the best intentions of posting them “some day”!
Hope you had a stellar 2006- here’s to a wonderful 2007 and all the great things that the new year brings.
-Eric
(P.S. - we had a site glitch this last weekend- oops! back up and running now.)

Origami Tessellations now supplies updates via email November 1st, 2006
So, in case you would prefer to receive an email with new content vs. checking this website from a feedreader (or actually visiting the site directly, for that matter) I have turned on a feature of FeedBurner which will deliver a daily email to you if and ONLY if there is new content on this site.
If you are so inclined to subscribe to this, you can click on the link in the upper right of the web page (the part that says “Subscribe to Origami Tessellations via Email”, hopefully that is self explanatory…)
Or, you can use this form:
I’ve long thought about turning this on, but I’ve only gotten around to it now. sign up if you like!

Italy Travel Suggestions? September 27th, 2006
So, Origami Tessellations (in the guise of Eric Gjerde) will be travelling to “Il Convegno del CDO in Verbania, Italy, on December 8-10. I should be rolling into Milan on the 7th, and heading back out sometime later on the next week (13th? 15th? something like that.)
Right now I’ve got an open schedule, other than that Friday through Sunday, so if any other origami/math/design/art freaks in that region of Europe want to meet up I’ll be in the area. I’m contemplating staying in Milan for a day or two and then maybe checking out Firenze, although that’s all utterly unknown right now.
Anybody have suggestions as to what I should go see? It’s going to be wintertime, but I think I can handle whatever Italy can throw at me- I do live in the coldest state in the continental US. There’s so much to see that I’m having a bit of cultural overload. I might have a travelling partner (my much cooler younger brother) to boot, if I’m lucky.
If you’ve got some hints, throw me a bone here. I should be rolling with some seriously sweet geometrical monstrosities, as well, so if for some reason you’d like to see my creations up-close-and-personal just ask, and I’ll make a vagabond journey to your burg and do some show-and-tell.
Thanks!
-Eric

What do people search for? March 20th, 2006
I never fail to be amazed at some of the things that people look for, online.
I’m posting this because I’m a computer geek at heart, and I find such things interesting. It’s fascinating to see how many vague searches there are, as well as extremely precise ones. My fellow web users, you intrigue me!
Here’s all the Google, Yahoo, and MSN queries for the year to date:

My Flickr 1 Year Anniversary! March 7th, 2006
patterned “spread” hex tile fold on Flickr, by Origomi
It was about one year ago today that I started putting photos on Flickr! Thanks so much to all of you who have made it the wonderful experience that it has been. I have met so many interesting and delightful people from all over the world in this last year. I feel very blessed.
Thank you!

Photo pages update February 28th, 2006
not a huge deal, just upgraded to the latest version of FAlbum (0.6.4, in case you’re interested).
It directly ties your flickr pages and photos into your WordPress blog, which just works amazingly well. It’s had a bunch of new features and updates installed, including permalink-friendly titling options, photo size choosing just like Flickr, the ability to add/change comments and titles from the web pages directly, etc.
If you’re using WordPress at all, it’s really worth using. I highly recommend it.
(And my apologies to the swedish reader who was browsing through all the photos! I cut you off mid-browse. Sorry about that. It should be all better now.)

new translation plugin February 16th, 2006
I just installed automatic machine translation for my blog- you can now autotranslate into German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
what a handy little plugin- just click the flag in the upper right hand corner! and you can bookmark the translated pages, no less. very cool.
I notice a lot of visitors running my site through Google and Babelfish translations, so hopefully this will save those folks some time.
Thanks to CW @ futurefeeder for the great plugin tip.

site tweaks (non-origami post) January 5th, 2006
Wow. yesterday something funky and not-so-good happened to my webserver, and things just stopped working there for a while.
I’m in the process of relocating it to a different server, but there’s some additional cost involved, so I’m putting a small google adbar on my page. (the horrors! the indignity! etc.)
I hope you can forgive me for this obtrusive little item, but hopefully it will defray the cost a bit over time.
Also, yesterday there was more traffic on this site than I have ever seen to date. Traffic good, broken-down-server bad. So if it’s being pokey at some point in the future try again later on. (But, of course, don’t stay away forever! We’d miss you.)
I’m looking forward to making 2006 a wonderful folding year; I hope you are too!

I’d like to wish all my friends a Merry Christmas! I’ll be travelling for much of the next week, so there will be pretty random postings for a while. I hope you spend some wonderful time with friends and family and enjoy yourself!
best wishes,
