Pentagons and Negative Stars

Joel Cooper created this wonderful pattern of pentagons and “negative space” stars a while back, and posted a crease pattern on his Flickr page. I took the liberty of recreating it as a PDF, for easier printing. I am posting it here with his permission. He had this to say about the CP:

“The only thing that could be changed, if you want it absolutely perfect, is the little narrow trapezoids between the pentagons around the outside (CP error see image). When I drew the CP, I couldn’t figure out the landmarks for the mountain folds (solid-lines) on those things, so I just guessed where they should be. They should all be the same size, and I can see now that the mountain -fold should move out a little, so that they’re all about 3 mm. This is very minor, and really doesn’t even affect the folding process anyway. “

Joel’s original CP is here:

Folding pentagonal shapes is really kind of tricky, but it’s worth it in the end- especially if you’re looking to explore some alternate geometries. Go ahead and give it a try!

Is this the same Joel Cooper who did ceramic mosaics in the 60′s. If so how can I reach him?
